Home Share Melbourne is supporting young people who have experienced homelessness or are at risk of homelessness to find safe and affordable housing with caring community members.
The person offering the room offers it at a significantly below market rent and provides mentoring support to enable the young person to improve their living skills.
If you have a spare bedroom and a passion for supporting young people, we want to hear from you!
What is the eligibility criteria?
People offering rooms need to have secure tenure and be either renters or owners. Renters must have permission from their landlord.
People must be over the age of 17 years old and have a minimum of one spare bedroom in good condition.
Both parties need to be able to manage living in a shared environment and be committed to the values of homesharing which include reciprocity, respect and kindness.
What are the benefits of homesharing?
Homesharing is a great opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. Offering a home to a young person provides them with a stable base which will enable them to study or work and will provide them with friendship and hope for the future.
How long does my room have to be available?
A minimum of six months is required as a lot of time and energy goes into matching the right people together. However, we understand that people's circumstances change and that not all matches will work long term. Either party can end the arrangement early if needed.
What safety checks are involved?
Two reference checks are completed by phone as well as a police check on people offering their spare room. Two reference checks are also completed on the person.
What ongoing support is provided?
Our team will check in regularly with both parties throughout the first six month period.
What if I have a pet?
Please let us know if you have a pet and will will try and match you with an animal lover.
