Home Share Melbourne are working with the City of Port Phillip Council and Flatmates.com.au to match asylum seekers with Householders who have spare bedrooms in their homes. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide a welcoming space for people in need. If you have a room in the City of Port Phillip (or surrounding suburbs) and are happy to open your home, please complete the eligibility survey. You must be able to provide a bedroom for a minimum of six months, with either no lodging fee in exchange for some help around the house or a low cost alternative. Please note the maximum rental cost of $170 per week (including bills).

Home Share Melbourne would love to be able to house young people who are at risk of homelessness with members of the community. This could include young adults leaving foster care, young people experiencing domestic violence or difficult financial situations. This is a mutually beneficial arrangement that provides support and assistance for both parties involved. To make this happen, Home Share Melbourne rely on donations. If you are interested in donating to sponsor a young person, please visit our donate page. If you have a spare bedroom and are happy to accommodate a young person, please complete the eligibility survey.
What is the eligibility criteria?
Householders need to have secure tenure and be either renters or owners. Renters must have permission from their landlord.
Householders must be over the age of 18 years old and have a minimum of one spare bedroom in good condition. The Householder must be able to live relatively independently and not need the Homesharer to provide personal care.
Both parties need to be able to manage living in a shared environment and be committed to the values of homesharing which include reciprocity, respect and kindness.
What are the benefits of homesharing?
Not only will having a flatmate help you pay your bills and your rent, it will also provide companionship and support around the home. This can increase your feeling of community and safety. It's also a great opportunity to learn new skills from each other and meet new people.
How long does my room have to be available?
A minimum of six months is required as a lot of time and energy goes into matching the right people together. However, we understand that people's circumstances change and that not all matches will work long term. Either party can end the arrangement early if needed.
What safety checks are involved?
Two reference checks are completed by phone as well as a police check.
What ongoing support is provided?
Our coordinator will check in regularly with both parties throughout the first six month period.
What if I have a pet?
If you have a pet we will match you with someone that is happy to live with a pet in their home.
