HOW IT WORKS

Homeshare supports people who live with a disability to find a supportive flatmate who provides them with an average of 10 hours per week of companionship, light household tasks such as pet care and mentoring in  exchange for free rent. The arrangements are very flexible and some will involve a reduced rent and 5 hours per week of companionship.
We assist people to create their housing vision and get this funded through their NDIS package. We can also assist in finding a home to rent. Finally we will find you the perfect flatmate to support you to live in a connected way with the support of a like minded flatmate.

FAQ

How  long  does
the  process  take?

We understand that people who contact the program are wanting to be matched quite quickly. The Home Share team work as efficiently as they can to review all applications. Care is taken to make sure the right match is found. This means that sometimes this process can take a little extra time. The process can take anywhere from two weeks to several months for the right flatmate to be found.

How  long  is
the  commitment?

A minimum of six months is required as a lot of time and energy goes into matching the right people together. A commitment of 12-18 month + ideal.

Can  the  flat mate
claim  rental  assistance?

If the flatmate would otherwise be eligible to claim rental assistance, then they are still able to claim this when matched through Home Share Melbourne.

What  if  the  arrangements
don't  work  out?

It is natural that some arrangements will not be the right fit. In these cases, the Home Share Coordinator will actively assist both parties to work through any issues or concerns. Home Share Melbourne will move the Homesharer out of the home as soon as possible and look for alternative options.

TESTIMONIALS

"First of all, I would like to say thank you to Home Share team. It’s a great experience for me to share a house with a mature lady. I was matched with this lady by Home Share while I was struggling financially. I provided her assistance in cooking & other housework. In return I live rent free in her house.

When I moved to Australia I lost my connection to the older generation through my grandparents. Being a Homesharer has given that back to me.

While living with her & helping her to stay in her own house gives me a feeling of satisfaction, I think we are helping each other. And it’s always great to have someone in the house."

"Following the death of my father, my mother at age 90 was for the first time living alone. She felt lonely and insecure. From my community work I knew of the concept of home sharing.

At the time of my search Home Share Melbourne was just starting up. We met with Carla, the most wonderful, compassionate, caring co-ordinator of the project. She gauged mum's personality and matched her with a young woman who needed not only a roof over her head but also a caring companion.

The match has worked beautifully for both of them. They share stories and experiences and long cold winter nights. The 10 hour contribution has been invaluable. I couldn't be more thrilled. It works for all parties including family who don't have to worry about mum overnight."
