Home Share Melbourne are working with the City of Port Phillip Council and Flatmates.com.au to match asylum seekers with caring community members who have spare bedrooms in their homes. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide a welcoming space for people in need. If you have a room in the City of Port Phillip (or surrounding suburbs) and are happy to open your home, please complete the eligibility survey. You must be able to provide a bedroom for a minimum of six months, with either no lodging fee in exchange for some help around the house or a low cost alternative. Please note the maximum rental cost of $150 per week (including bills).

What is the eligibility criteria?
People offering rooms need to have secure tenure and be either renters or owners. Renters must have permission from their landlord.
People must be over the age of 18 years old and have a minimum of one spare bedroom in good condition.
Both parties need to be able to manage living in a shared environment and be committed to the values of homesharing which include reciprocity, respect and kindness.
What are the benefits of homesharing?
Homesharing is a great opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. Offering a home to a person seeking asylum will support them to understand Australian culture, improve their language skills, find employment and will provide them with friendship and hope for the future.
How long does my room have to be available?
A minimum of six months is required as a lot of time and energy goes into matching the right people together. However, we understand that people's circumstances change and that not all matches will work long term. Either party can end the arrangement early if needed.
What safety checks are involved?
Two reference checks are completed by phone as well as a police check on people offering their spare room. Two reference checks are also completed on the person who is seeking asylum, however, it is commonly not possible to conduct police checks due to factors such as the individuals having limited ID.
What ongoing support is provided?
Our team will check in regularly with both parties throughout the first six month period.
What if I have a pet?
Please let us know if you have a pet and will will try and match you with an animal lover.
