About Home Share Melbourne

Home Share Melbourne exists to provide people with a choice about where and how they live.

At Home Share Melbourne, we focus on the idea of a ‘home’ rather a house.  A home is not just a bed and roof over your head, it’s somewhere that is safe, comfortable, welcoming, which is full of people (and pets!) who you have chosen to live with.  A home is a sanctuary and how it feels can impact the rest of your life.

For some people – like those living with a disability, young people or those seeking asylum – the process of finding a safe, comfortable, and welcoming home can be complex.  That’s where Home Share Melbourne come in – we help make the process of finding a home and housemate easy and dignified.  We believe that where and how you live should be choice, rather than the result of your circumstances.

Ultimately, we’d like to see everyone find their home.

We use the international homeshare model to support people to live better, more connected lives. Homeshare programs have been operating for 40 years and are now run in 18 countries around the world.

Home Share Melbourne is run by HANZA Inc. HANZA is a registered charity that has been operating since 2006. In that time, HANZA has become a leader in the international homeshare movement. Home Share Melbourne is a not-for-profit social enterprise.

Asylum seekers

Home Share Melbourne are working with the City of Port Phillip Council and Flatmates.com.au to match asylum seekers with community members who have spare bedrooms in their homes. Opening up safe and affordable (or free) housing to asylum seekers fills a gap in services funded by government and Councils and fulfils our mission to ensure that everyone in our community should have a safe place to call home.

Young people

Home Share Melbourne has seen young people's lives transformed from being part of the program. Breaking the cycle of homelessness through our youth program centres on two things, providing affordable housing and a supportive flatmate who provides mentoring. We hope to house many more young people in the future with the assistance of grants and donations.
